A consumer credit covers any loan between 200 and 75,000 euros intended to finance a good or service outside of real estate. Obtaining a credit suited to your needs requires understanding the mechanisms that determine the actual cost of the loan and the criteria that lenders evaluate.
Each type of financing responds to a different logic, and choosing the right contract depends on a few specific technical parameters, including the new rules that will come into effect at the end of 2026.
APR and the actual cost of credit: what the rate hides or reveals
The annual percentage rate (APR) is the only indicator that aggregates all the costs associated with a loan: bank interest, application fees, borrower insurance, and any brokerage commissions. Comparing two offers based solely on the nominal rate ignores a significant part of the cost.
The APR can never exceed the usury rate published by the Banque de France. This ceiling varies depending on the type of credit and the amount borrowed. A small personal loan will have a different usury threshold than a revolving credit of several thousand euros.
To concretely assess the burden of a credit, you must relate the monthly payment to the disposable income, that is, what remains after fixed charges are deducted. A low APR over a long duration may cost more in accumulated interest than a slightly higher APR repaid more quickly. The repayment duration affects the total cost as much as the rate, and it is often the least considered parameter during a simulation.

Secured credit or personal loan: choose according to the nature of the project

The fundamental distinction in consumer credit opposes secured credit to personal loans. The former finances a specific purchase (vehicle, appliances, renovations). If the sale is canceled or if the good is not delivered, the credit contract is automatically canceled. This legal protection ties the loan to the purchased good.
The personal loan, on the other hand, is not linked to any specific purchase. The borrowed amount can be used to finance a move, a trip, or several simultaneous expenses. The trade-off is the absence of protection related to the delivery of a good.
The choice between these two formulas depends on the nature of the project:
- A unique and identified purchase (car, fitted kitchen) justifies secured credit, as the cancellation of the sales contract leads to the cancellation of the credit.
- A need for unallocated cash or the combination of several small expenses points towards a personal loan, which is more flexible in its use.
- A renovation project may fall under either category depending on whether the estimate is signed with a craftsman (secured) or if purchases are made gradually (personal).
Revolving credit, a third common form, provides a replenishable reserve of money. Its rate is generally higher, and the risk of slipping into prolonged debt is real if repayments remain at a minimum.
New consumer credit rules applicable from November 20, 2026
The European directive 2023/2225, transposed into French law by ordinance no. 2025-880 of September 3, 2025, fundamentally changes the scope of consumer credit starting November 20, 2026. Several financial products that were previously poorly regulated will become full-fledged credits.
Installment payments of less than three months, mini-loans under 200 euros, free credits, and leases with an option to purchase (LOA) now fall within the regulatory framework. Choosing to pay in three installments during an online purchase or to finance a car through LOA will trigger the same obligations as for a traditional loan: standardized pre-contractual information sheet, display of the APR, enhanced right of withdrawal.
The ceiling for consumer credit increases from 75,000 to 100,000 euros, which incorporates larger financing amounts into this protective regime.
Advertisements highlighting the ease of obtaining credit are explicitly prohibited by the new texts. Phrases like “credit granted in a few clicks” or “no conditions” will disappear from the legal advertising landscape. This measure directly targets the prevention of over-indebtedness, as 18-29 year-olds represent a growing share of the cases filed with the Banque de France.

Debt ratio and simulation: preparing a solid loan application
Before submitting a request, calculating your debt ratio provides a realistic view of your borrowing capacity. This ratio relates all credit charges (existing and future monthly payments) to net income. A controlled debt ratio remains the primary acceptance criterion for a file by lending institutions.
Online simulation allows testing several combinations of amount, duration, and monthly payment before committing. Shortening the duration increases the monthly payment but reduces the total cost. Lengthening the duration lightens the installments at the cost of additional interest. The trade-off is specific to each budgetary situation.
Several elements strengthen a file during the lender’s evaluation:
- The seniority and stability of income (contract, regularity of inflows).
- The absence of recent banking incidents (frequent overdrafts, rejected direct debits).
- The coherence between the requested amount and the described project, especially for secured credit.
- The presence of residual savings, which signals controlled budget management.
The loan offer, once received, must be read in full. It mentions the APR, the total amount due, the schedule of payments, and the conditions for early repayment. This last point matters: repaying a loan before its term reduces the cost of interest, but some contracts provide for an early repayment indemnity regulated by law.
The right of withdrawal, set at fourteen calendar days after signing, remains a guarantee to know. It allows you to backtrack on a commitment without having to justify your decision or pay a penalty.
Comparing several offers based on the APR, checking the coherence between the chosen duration and your actual budget, and reading the entire preliminary offer before signing: these three technical reflexes protect better than searching for the lowest displayed rate in the window.
